Number of rheumatologists up by nearly a third in England

Posted: 1 April 2016

There are 563 full time equivalent rheumatologists in the NHS in England, an increase of 119 (26.8%) since May 2010.

The figure was revealed to the charity's patron Lord Wills in a written parliamentary answer by health minister Lord Prior.

The new GCA guidelines about to be published state that new patients should be referred to rheumatologists and their ongoing care shared between consultants and GPs. Some PMR patients should also be referred to rheumatologists.
