East Anglia PMR-GCA Support

Could you help with this important research?

PMR-GCA Support East Anglia is pleased to announce that they are funding a small research study by researchers from the University of East Anglia, Dr Janice Mooney and Dr Richard Watts, titled “An Exploration of the informal care and informational needs of carers of people with Polymyalgia rheumatica / Giant cell arteritis” (CAPRICA).

People with PMR/GCA have a close relationship with their carers but their carers’ specific needs are often not investigated. The research team have previously shown that people with vasculitis have high informational needs, particularly diagnosis, prognosis, investigations, treatment and side effects. What is not known is whether their carers also have high informational needs and whether they are the same. This project aims to investigate the informational needs of carers and to determine their unmet needs by conducting a series of face-to-face interviews with ten pairs of individuals and carers. They will also assess the role that carers play in the lives of people with PMR/GCA.

The researchers have also previously shown that people with vasculitis and their carers rarely recognise the term 'carer' as applying to them, but are using the term to describe anyone who gives care - either occasionally or someone who undertakes full personal care - often a partner or family member. They also know that people with these conditions need different levels of help at different times.
